'That would be a dream' - Luka Modric reveals ideal retirement plan as midfielder prepares to enter negotiations with Real Madrid over new deal at age of 39

The 39-year-old midfield maestro has already etched his name into Real Madrid’s history books, becoming the club’s oldest goalscorer and appearance maker this season. However, rather than slowing down, Modric is hungry for more success and has set his sights on playing throughout the 2025/26 campaign.

Modric has a clear long-term vision for his career - he is determined to lead Croatia at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Despite growing speculation over his future, reports suggest that Modric is open to committing to Real Madrid for another year, even if it means accepting a further salary reduction. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, contract renewal talks between Modric’s representatives and the club will begin soon, as continuing in Madrid is his top priority. While clubs from the Saudi Pro League and Major League Soccer (MLS) have shown strong interest, Modric is expected to turn down offers from abroad. He wants to stay in Europe to maintain peak fitness ahead of the 2026 World Cup, prioritising competitive football over a lucrative move elsewhere.

“Right now, I’m not thinking about retirement. But as I’ve always said – I would like to retire at Real Madrid, that would be a dream for me. We’ll see what happens,” he said in an interview with French outlet Telefoot.

“There’s still a lot of the season left, and I want to focus on what’s left, because there are a lot of games still to play. I’m in no rush to make a decision.”

Before returning to club duty, Modric will take on another leadership role as he captains Croatia in their UEFA Nations League quarter-final second leg against France. Croatia are heading into the match with a 2-0 advantage from the first leg, and Modric will be crucial in guiding his nation into the next round.
