Ex-Liverpool and Ajax star Ryan Babel confirms retirement from football over a year after his last game

The 37-year-old announced on social media on Saturday that he was hanging up his boots after nearly two decades as a professional footballer. After last playing for Turkish side Eyupspor in 2023, the former Netherlands international has decided to call time on his career.

In a video message on X, formerly Twitter: "Woah, guys. As I look back on my career it feels surreal to think about how far I have come. From my early days at Ajax, to playing for some of the biggest clubs in Europe. It's been a journey full of unforgettable moments.

"Football gave me everything I dreamed of and so much more. Thank you to all my team-mates, coaches, fans and even the media who have been part of this incredible adventure. This game will forever be in my heart. Thank you."

Babel played for some huge European clubs such as Liverpool, Ajax, Galatasaray and more. He chalked up 69 caps for his country and won multiple trophies along the way.

Previously, Babel spoke about trying to follow his former Liverpool team-mates Xabi Alonso and Steven Gerrard into management but that may be on hold for a while.
