Late Premier League bid for USMNT star Josh Sargent on transfer deadline day as Sunderland look to lure Championship Golden Boot leader away from Norwich

United States international Sargent has seen a return to top-flight competition, either in England or across Europe, speculated on across the summer window. No deal has been done as he is tied to a long-term contract at Carrow Road.

That deal is keeping his asking price high, with the Canaries understandably reluctant to do business. Norwich boss Liam Manning has said: “It would have to take something unbelievable for anything to be done. I would never want to throw some words out there that get held against me. So as it stands, there is nothing I am aware of.”

That situation may have changed on deadline day, with Football Insider claiming that Sunderland have joined the race for Sargent’s signature. The Black Cats are looking to strengthen a squad that has returned to the big time for the first time in eight years.

It is claimed that “contact” has been made with Norwich, as Sunderland look to lure the Championship’s leading goalscorer - with five efforts to his name this season - away from Norfolk.

Sargent has played in the Premier League before, having joined Norwich at that level in 2021, but managed just two goals through 26 appearances. He has come a long way since then, with 31 efforts being recorded across the last two campaigns.
