Joshua Kimmich praises Vincent Kompany impact as Bayern Munich kick off contract negotiations with German defender

Bayern Munich beat Tottenham 2-1 in their final Asian tour match to cap off an unbeaten start for new head coach Vincent Kompany. Kimmich played a key part in a dominating display from the Bundesliga team and praised his manager after the match. The 29-year-old could also be in contention to earn a new contract ahead of the new campaign, with sporting director Max Eberl confirming there have been initial discussions.

Speaking on Kompany, Kimmich said: "You could already see a certain thumbprint. I think it was nice for the spectators too, it went back and forth. Both teams played attacking football and pressed one-on-one. I’m very hungry for the new season and we have ambitious goals together."

Eberl also spoke on a potential new contract for Kimmich, saying: "It was a very good and positive conversation. We will have further discussions. I think the general perception in Germany does not do him justice. Joshua was an important player for FC Bayern for many years and should continue to be so in the future."

Tying Kimmich down to a new contract would be another positive step for Kompany as he looks to reclaim the Bundesliga title with Bayern. The 91-cap international is in the final 12 months of his current deal in Munich but remains a key part of the squad in this new era.

Bayern will face Spurs again before they kick off their new domestic campaign. The Bavarian giants will travel to north London on Saturday 10 August for another friendly that could see Harry Kane reunited with his former club.
