  • WHAT HAPPENED?

During England's 1-1 draw with Denmark, where they struggled for long periods, Liverpool legend Carragher was critical of Reds defender Alexander-Arnold - who is playing as a defensive midfielder for Gareth Southgate's side - and Arsenal midfielder Rice. He said the duo were too deep and centre-backs John Stones and Marc Guehi would have been tearing their hair out at this.

  • WHAT JAMIE CARRAGHER SAID

Carragher tweeted: "Trent & Rice are far too deep when Denmark have the ball, they are too concerned with what’s behind them. They need to stop what’s in front of them. Centre backs need to be screaming at them to get out to enable them to push out."

He later posted: "Pleased Southgate has made changes, as by the look of England so far they are going to need real energy from the bench in every game. Disappointed Anthony Gordon wasn’t one of those changes."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Despite failing to fire against Denmark, England are still top of their Euros group and are in pole position to reach the last 16 of the competition. However, if they want to win the tournament in Germany, the Three Lions will have to improve a great deal.
