- Maatsen sent on loan at BVB until the summer
- Has extended contract until 2026 with the Blues
- Left-back will look to pair up with Sancho on the wings
WHAT HAPPENED?
The 21-year-old was struggling to nail down a starting berth under Mauricio Pochettino at Stamford Bridge and has hence opted for greener pastures to get regular minutes on the pitch. The deal with Dortmund has no buy-option which means that the player will return to London at the end of the 2023-24 campaign.

According to The Guardian, Dortmund will pay a £2m loan fee as part of the agreement. His fresh contract incorporates a release clause, with Chelsea aiming for Maatsen's value to rise during his time at Dortmund so that they can fetch a significant transfer fee by selling him off.
DID YOU KNOW?
Maatsen was almost on the brink of leaving Chelsea in the summer with Burnley having a £31.5m offer accepted on deadline day. However, the Dutch left-back opted to remain at Stamford Bridge and vowed to fight for his place. However, he failed to impress Pochettino in training and despite injuries to Marc Cucurella and Ben Chilwell, he did not get ample playing time.
WHAT NEXT?
Maatsen will hope to revive his sinking career at Signal Iduna Park under Edin Terzic where he might be paired up with Sancho on the left flank. The duo can be seen in action on Saturday against Darmstadt in the Bundesliga.
