Former referee Dermot Gallagher and ex-players Sue Smith and Dean Ashton all criticised the decision to give the midfielder his marching orders on Sky Sports after the game, and the Daily Mail reports United used clips of their analysis as they looked to have the red card rescinded.

United's appeal was successful, but the independent commission reportedly ignored the pundits' views when it came to making their decision. Less than a week later, Fernandes was sent off again as United drew 3-3 with Porto in the Europa League.
