Gary Neville admits current Man Utd side have club's glorious history 'rammed down their throats' as treble winner tells Erik ten Hag's struggling squad how they can 'shock the world'

Ahead of the release of the 99 documentary, a three-part Amazon Prime show that looks at United's treble-winning season 25 years ago, ex-Red Devils defender Neville has spoken about the club's current malaise. He admits it may be "uncomfortable" for the first-team squad to be reminded of United's past success but hopes they can pull off a shock upset by winning the FA Cup against Manchester City later this month.

He told BBC Sport at the documentary premiere: "At the moment it’s really difficult. It mustn’t be easy for them having this history rammed down their throats and, to be fair, quite a few of us are on television and we’re talking about the team regularly so I can understand why that would be uncomfortable.

"I would hope that say, for instance, in three weeks when Manchester United play the FA Cup final against City, they see that as an opportunity to shock this country and probably the world by beating City in a final. It was an FA Cup that Sir Alex Ferguson won in 1990 that started off this successful period that we were part of. Why can’t this FA Cup against Manchester City?"

United were serial winners under Sir Alex Ferguson and in 1999 clinched the Champions League, Premier League, and FA Cup. Currently, they are eighth in the English top-flight, haven't won the league since 2013, and if they don't beat Man City in the FA Cup final, they will finish the season trophyless and manager Ten Hag could lose his job.

Neville's former side United are back in Premier League action on Sunday afternoon at home to title hopefuls Arsenal, followed by the visit of Europe-chasing Newcastle United on Wednesday night at Old Trafford.
