Ex-Real Madrid star Raul Albiol won't be stopped as centre-back eyes Serie A return at 39 after leaving Villarreal

Veteran Spanish defender Albiol is on the verge of a return to Serie A after entering advanced negotiations with newly-promoted side Pisa, according to a report from AS. The 39-year-old, who recently left Villarreal, held a transfer summit with Pisa's management in Viareggio alongside his agents. The parties have reportedly reached an agreement in principle on a one-year contract with an option for a second season.

The move would fulfill Albiol's publicly stated "dream" of finishing his career in Italy, where he previously spent four successful seasons with Napoli. The World Cup and two-time European Championship winner brings a wealth of experience to a Pisa side looking to solidify their place in Italy's top flight. After a distinguished career that included spells at Valencia, Real Madrid and Villarreal, Albiol would join fellow veteran Juan Cuadrado in Alberto Gilardino's squad.

Speaking on his desire to play in Italy, Albiol stated last month: “My family and I have a dream: to close out our career in Italy. We’ve had a great time in Naples; it’s a country very similar to Spain. Our door is always open to Italy.”

Albiol and Pisa are expected to finalise the financial details of the contract before the defender officially signs for the club. With his family already present in Italy, the transfer is considered a life decision as much as a professional one. Once the deal is confirmed, he will immediately join the squad, as they intend a great run for their Serie A campaign.
