Erik ten Hag admits Man Utd 'are in difficult times' as he reflects on 'disappointing season' amid reports he will be sacked

The 54-year-old Dutchman has endured a challenging campaign, overseeing 14 top-flight defeats - their most in a single cmapiagn in the Premier League era. Although United secured a 3-2 victory over Newcastle United to conclude their home fixtures with a win, European qualification for next season remains uncertain.

It has been reported that Ten Hag's future could well depend on United's European qualification and hence Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS are waiting until the FA Cup final on May 25 - as a victory against Manchester City would see them qualify for the Europa League, irrespective of league standings.

Following the victory on Wednesday night, Ten Hag, amid a mix of applause and boos, bravely addressed the fans who stayed for the players' traditional lap of honour.

Reflecting on the season, he went on to add: "They told me every manager is doing this, that is why! I think it's very important. It was our last game here, we finish the season with still two games to go but away from Old Trafford. We want to thank them for sticking with us. We really appreciate the team appreciate it and the club appreciate it. We are in difficult times, this club is in transition and the results are not what they can expect. But there are reasons for it, all the injuries, but we've still had as disappointing season as we had.

"But, in the disappointment, there's progress from some good players - Rasmus Hojlund, Amad DIallo, Alejandro Garnacho. I'm always happy when young players are progressing very good across the season. I've said before that some good things are happening. Some very good things. There is high potential in the club. This season is not over yet. We will travel to Brighton where we go for three points, and then we go to Wembley. And I promise you that the players will give everything to bring a cup to Old Trafford."

As United prepare for their final Premier League fixture against Brighton and the FA Cup final against Manchester City, the stakes are incredibly high. Securing a spot in European competitions and potentially lifting the FA Cup would not only salvage some pride but also provide a foundation for rebuilding and improving next season. More importantly, Ten Hag could get a lifeline from INEOS if he can guide the Red Devils to Europe next season.
