'He'll be ripped to shreds!' - England star pinpointed as the weak spot in Gareth Southgate's team by Roy Keane ahead of Euro 2024 opener against Serbia

There has been considerable speculation about Alexander-Arnold starting as a midfielder for England’s Group C opener against Serbia. Despite his reputation as one of the best right-backs in the world, Southgate has been experimenting with Alexander-Arnold in a more central role. However, Keane has voiced strong reservations about Trent Alexander-Arnold’s suitability for a midfield role in England's squad for Euro 2024. The former Manchester United star believes that the versatile Liverpool player will be found wanting, particularly against top-tier teams, as Keane is not convinced with Alexander-Arnold's defensive capabilities.

Speaking to ITV ahead Keane said: “It’s all about getting the balance right in your team. They’ve got some brilliant individuals, we’ve mentioned that many times before. Four or five players who would walk into any team at this tournament, but it’s getting that balance right. They [England] have players who can go and win you football matches, but the problem is defending against the really better teams.

“I think they’ll be fine in the groups, I think Trent’s position will be fine in those matches, but it’s against the real top teams I think he’ll be found out. I think he’ll be ripped to shreds if he plays against one of the better teams in central midfield.”

As England prepares for their Euro 2024 campaign, the debate over Alexander-Arnold’s role will continue. The core issue for Southgate is finding the right balance between attack and defence.
