Edu set to LEAVE role as Arsenal sporting director in significant blow to Mikel Arteta's Gunners

The Brazilian spent four years as a player at Arsenal and was a part of the 'Invincibles' squad. In 2019, Edu was appointed as the club's sporting director and it was under his leadership that the Gunners completed several key signings, including Declan Rice from West Ham and Martin Odegaard from Real Madrid.

The Daily Mail now reports that the 46-year-old is now set to leave his role after spending five years at Emirates Stadium. While the exact reason for the Brazilian's departure remains unclear, the report claims that the club may have made some changes to responsibilities in their hierarchy. According to Sky Sports, there is interest in Edu from Evangelos Marinakis' group of clubs, which includes Nottingham Forest and Olympiacos.

The news of the sporting director's departure comes as a huge blow for Mikel Arteta and the club who have seen a revival since the 2022-23 season. The Gunners have fought toe to toe with Manchester City in the title race in the past couple of seasons and much of the credit goes to Edu's recruitment policy.

After a disappointing loss against Newcastle United at the weekend, the north London side will be back in action on Wednesday as they take on reigning Italian champions Inter in a Champions League clash.
