    WHAT HAPPENED

Djordje Mihailovic scored twice to lead the Colorado Rapids to a 2-1 victory over Los Angeles FC in the first leg of their CONCACAF Champions Cup Round 1 series. The match played at 6°F at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, saw Mihailovic convert a penalty in the 48th minute and score a stunning free kick in the 80th minute.

The free-kick had the fans, who braved the freezing conditions, in awe especially as it was at least 27 yards from goal. But despite that, Mihailovic gave LAFC goalkeeper Hugo Lloris no chance at stopping the strike, as he sent it into the top right corner of the goal.

“I kicked it as hard as I could. Hoped for the best. It was impossible to play on this field. It’s frozen.” Mihailović said.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Despite the scoreline finishing at 2-1, both sides struggled to get into their groove in the first half with the weather playing some part as, officially, the temperature was reported as 6°F. That would make it the second coldest game between two MLS teams although things opened up in the second half. Colorado Rapids’ forward Kevin Cabral won his side a penalty in the opening minute of the second half which Mihailovic converted.

Cabral was at it again 10 minutes later but failed to convert his chance although that didn’t matter thanks to Mihailovic’s stunning free-kick after he sent the ball past Hugo Lloris. LAFC did manage to get one back just before the full-time whistle and go into the second leg with an away goal in hand.
