'United Road!' - David de Gea set for belated Man Utd farewell as Fiorentina prepare for Old Trafford visit

The 34-year-old shot stopper was never given a real goodbye at United, with his final appearance being a loss to rivals Manchester City in the FA Cup final in 2023, shortly before his contract expired. 

Now, the Spaniard is set to finally return to Old Trafford, and is expected to be met with a big reception from fans who never got the chance to wish him well before leaving the club. De Gea himself is looking forward to the pre-season match between United and Fiorentina, posting on X: "United Road. See you Saturday." 

More than 50,000 tickets have been sold for the match on Saturday. Many may be coming to watch new signings Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha feature at Old Trafford in a red shirt for the first time, but there is no doubt that De Gea will get his moment as well.

De Gea took an extended break from football before returning to Fiorentina, where he has made a name for himself. The Serie A side start their domestic campaign on 24 August, but must first face a play-off to determine whether they will compete in the Conference League this season.
