Cristiano Ronaldo's 'contagious hunger' keeping him in Portugal picture as Roberto Martinez insists Al-Nassr superstar is the best player he's ever worked with

Ronaldo turned 39 earlier in February but is showing few signs of slowing down despite being in the twilight of his career. The Portugal international, who now plies his trade at Al-Nassr, finished 2023 as the world's top male goalscorer and he leads the race for the Saudi Pro League Golden Boot with 22 goals so far this season. Ronaldo also remains a key player for Portugal, with manager Martinez outlining why he's still so important to the national team.

Martinez has explained why Ronaldo is the best player he's ever worked with, telling RTVE: "I've worked with many, but what sets Cristiano apart is the need to always be prepared to be the best. A contagious hunger, but very difficult to achieve."

The Portugal boss also looked ahead to Euro 2024 and spoke about his team's chances of lifting the trophy again.

"We have already won once. We are lucky to be able to play with four generations. Winning a European Championship has to do with the details of the day- It's a very demanding tournament, but what matters are the details," he said.

"France produces players at a volume that no other country can. England has a coach who created a club culture within the team. Belgium has a generation that is very competitive. And you can never leave out Italy, competitive for nature. And Germany, having a difficult period, but in 'their tournament' they can be champions."

Ronaldo already has a bulging trophy cabinet but will be aiming to add more silverware before finally hanging up his boots. The superstar has already hinted he could play into his 40s and has a contract with Al-Nassr until 2025. Ronaldo's team currently sit second in the Saudi Pro League, seven points behind leaders Al-Hilal.

Martinez and Ronaldo will link up with Portugal again in the summer for Euro 2024. Ronaldo lifted the trophy with the national team in 2016 and will be hoping for a second title. Portugal will take on Turkey, Czech Republic and one of Georgia, Greece, Luxembourg, or Kazakhstan in the group stages.
