    WHAT HAPPENED?

Palmer was back in the Chelsea team after suspension on Saturday and back in the goals for his new club too at Kenilworth Road. The summer signing scored twice and picked up an assist as Mauricio Pochettino's men ended 2023 with all three points against the Hatters. Palmer has proved an excellent signing since making the move from Manchester City and his ice-cold composure in front of goal has also seen him handed a new nickname at the club.

    WHAT MADUEKE AND PALMER SAID

Madueke revealed as much after the win. He told TNT Sports: "That's why they call him 'Cold Palmer' innit?"

Palmer was then asked about his goal celebration and revealed it had been inspired by Middlesbrough's Morgan Rogers. He added: "My boy did one for Middlesbrough, Morgs, so I told him I'd do it."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Palmer has been arguably Chelsea's best player this season and his latest heroics mean the Blues have ended a tumultuous 2023 with two wins in a week. Much more will be expected from Mauricio Pochettino's side in 2024, but Palmer's impressive performances since joining the club from Manchester City do offer optimism for the future.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Palmer has now been involved in 12 Premier League goals this season. The only player currently aged 21 or under with a better record in Europe's top five leagues this term is Real Madrid's Jude Bellingham on 15.

  • WHAT NEXT FOR CHELSEA?

Chelsea play two cup games before their next Premier League fixture. The Blues take on Preston North End in the third round of the FA Cup on January 6 and then face Middlesbrough in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final clash three days later.
