Barcelona x Nike gets the go-ahead! Why record-shattering €1.7 billion kit deal will now be signed off

The agreement garnered broad support from Barcelona’s members, with 419 votes cast in favour, 27 against, and 22 abstentions. While the specific financial details were not disclosed due to a confidentiality clause, insiders revealed to ESPN in November that the deal is worth over €100 million (£83m/$104.2 million) annually before bonuses.

"It's the best financial agreement in the history of sport with a kit supplier," Laporta said. "Nike understood the magnitude of Barça in the sporting world and the deal makes us stronger on all levels. It's important for the club's finances. The ratification of the deal aids our economic recovery and also helps us with LaLiga's financial fair play limit."

Despite this progress, sources indicate that the revenue generated by the Nike deal alone is insufficient to resolve the club's financial constraints entirely. As of September, Barcelona’s spending limit was capped at €426 million (£354m/$444m), but the club remains approximately €60 million (£50m/$63m) over that limit. This issue has affected the registrations of Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor, who are currently on temporary registrations set to expire on December 31. Barcelona are reportedly exploring multiple options to address this issue, including legal avenues to extend their registrations.

In the highly competitive world of football sponsorships, Barcelona’s deal with Nike is now among the most prominent. For context, Manchester United signed a £1 billion ($1.1 billion), 10-year partnership with Adidas in 2023. Meanwhile, Real Madrid reportedly earns around €120 million (£100m/$125m) annually from their Adidas agreement, signed in 2019.

Barcelona and Nike have enjoyed a long-standing relationship since 1998, and this new agreement further consolidates their collaboration. They return to action against Atletico Madrid at home on Saturday.
