  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Amorim has signed a contract with the Red Devils that will keep him at Old Trafford until 2027, with the option of a further year. While the Portuguese coach has been revered for his brilliant stint in charge of Sporting, some fans on social media are already dooming the 39-year-old to fail, similar to the other managers who followed on from Sir Alex Ferguson since his retirement.

    WHAT THE FANS ARE SAYING

One fan, @OG_Mavrickks, does not think Amorim is the right man for the job, as they posted: "He’s not what the club needs. Just another average unproven manager."

Another user, Arsenal fan @olamijuwon1007 added: "Good he's out of Sporting before we play them in the UCL. Mid table EPL clubs will humble him at Manchester United 😃."

@_FaridKhan believes the 39-year-old has taken a step down, saying: "Amorim leaving Sporting for Manchester United is like leaving your Ferrari to drive Toyota!"

But some users are backing Amorim to succeed. @RomeInTheEast posted: "Let’s go!!!! Let’s dust off the epic failure of Ten Hag and back the new man."

Popular United fan account @UTDTrey turned to rivals Manchester City following the announcement. He said: "I JUST SAW PEP CRYING IN THE CORNER."

And @Specsavers chimed in with their usual joke response, adding: "Welcome to Manchester, Ross Gellar."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

The United job is arguably the most scrutinised and pressure-heavy position you can pick up in football. Amorim is certainly putting himself in danger by accepting it, but if he can get a tune out of the squad then there is potential for him to make a real name for himself at one of the biggest clubs in the world.

    WHAT NEXT FOR AMORIM?

Fans will have to wait before they can get their first taste of Amorim's United. The Portuguese tactician will officially join on November 11 and his first match in charge will be against Ipswich on November 24.
