Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak backs Julian Alvarez after fan backlash over transfer rumours

The tension surrounding Alvarez has reached a breaking point following persistent reports linking him with a high-profile move away from the Spanish capital. During Atleti’s recent home encounter with Villarreal, the atmosphere turned sour as the home crowd voiced their frustration toward the player who has become the subject of intense Premier League interest.

Speaking to DAZN after the match, the veteran Slovenian goalkeeper was clear in his stance that the squad remains firmly behind their teammate regardless of the outside noise. Oblak stated: “We all need to be united. Julian is here, he’s with us in the team and while he’s with us, we’re going to support him and we want him in the best way. Unfortunately, it’s a situation that isn’t comfortable for anyone, but hopefully all that is sorted out and at the end of the season we can all be happy."

The situation escalated to the point where club officials felt the need to intervene as the players made their way off the pitch following the final whistle. While the rest of the Atletico squad performed their customary lap of appreciation for the home support, Alvarez was escorted directly to the dressing room to avoid further confrontation with the angry stands. Atletico head coach Diego Simeone confirmed that this was a calculated move by the hierarchy to prevent the situation from deteriorating even further in the public eye.

"People at the club told me that the club decided he shouldn’t go near the stands or the fans. It was the club’s decision to keep him away and separate him so he could go to the locker room," Simeone explained.

Previously, Simeone has also had to navigate the growing unrest within the fan base regarding his star striker. Alvarez was notably left out of the matchday squad for the La Liga season opener but returned to the bench for the Villarreal fixture. Coming on for the final 24 minutes, his presence did not receive the typical hero's welcome. When questioned about the audible whistles directed at the player and whether he had any words of wisdom for the forward, Simeone took a pragmatic approach to the brewing controversy.

"I’m not here to give advice. What I have to do is concentrate on my work, which is, from a sporting sense, to give my best for Atletico Madrid. The only thing I know is that if Atletico Madrid want to win a title, we need to be together, we need to have forwards, and we need to have important forwards."

Mikel Arteta and Arsenal remain closely linked with the striker, though securing his services will not be a simple or inexpensive task. Atletico have reportedly made it clear that they have no intention of selling the player to domestic rivals Barcelona, leaving the door slightly ajar for a move abroad.
