Erik ten Hag explains why Man Utd decided to stick with him as he confirms talks with Thomas Tuchel

After months of speculation concerning a possible exit, United have decided to keep Ten Hag as manager of the club. The Dutchman finished the season on a high by beating Manchester City in the FA Cup final and will be aiming for more silverware when the Premier League returns for the 2024-25 season in August.

United did speak to a host of candidates about the possibility of replacing Ten Hag before opting to keep hold of the Dutchman. Ten Hag has spoken out about the situation and says the club told him they held talks with former Chelsea and Bayern Munich boss Thomas Tuchel but ultimately decided to keep him on after an extensive evaluation.

He told NOS: "Well, not just the last few weeks, actually the entire season has been very hectic.Never a dull momentat Manchester United. Last week they suddenly showed up on my doorstep, with the message that they would like to continue with me. It is very wise that you evaluate things and then make decisions, as that is how it should be in any organisation. The new club management of Manchester United has also done this. They took extensive time to evaluate everything. They also told me that they have spoken to Thomas Tuchel. It is no secret to me that they have spoken to several trainers. In the Netherlands that isnot done, it is not allowed at all if you still have a sitting trainer. In England the rules are a bit different, but in the end they came to the conclusion that they already had the best trainer. They came to Ibiza with that message."

Ten Hag also revealed the talks to extend his current contract have also been held: "The conclusion of those conversations is that we will sit down to extend my contract. We still have to reach an agreement. Is that an ABC? No, that has not just been done yet, we still have to discuss that."

Ten Hag is now expected to sign a new contract at the club that will run until 2027. The move means the Dutchman's future at the club does seem secure for now, but it would be no surprise to see him come under pressure once again if his team fails to deliver performances and results on the pitch.
