Minnesota Twins vs Detroit Tigers team news

Minnesota Twins team news

For Minnesota, the story has been far more frustrating. Rookie right-hander Zebby Matthews has endured a rocky campaign, yielding 25 runs in just 44 innings of work. His peripherals suggest the struggles are no fluke, opponents carry a staggering .443 expected batting average against him, with a 10.7% barrel rate that shows hitters are squaring him up consistently. A 4.11 expected ERA underlines that opponents are cashing in when he’s on the hill.

The bats haven’t exactly bailed him out either. The Twins are averaging 4.17 runs per game, and outside of Byron Buxton and Matt Wallner, the lineup has been inconsistent. Buxton remains the centerpiece with a .282 average, 24 home runs, and a .560 slugging percentage, while Wallner has added 16 homers despite a low batting average. Beyond that, though, the offense looks thin, with only five active hitters owning an OPS+ north of 100, leaving the team vulnerable to pitchers who can navigate the top of the order.

Detroit Tigers team news

The Tigers will send Casey Mize to the mound, and the right-hander has been everything the club could ask for this year. Across 105 innings, he’s allowed just 45 runs while racking up 93 strikeouts. His numbers tell the story of a pitcher in command, holding opponents to a .244 expected batting average, a tidy 6.3% walk rate, and a 3.68 expected ERA. Simply put, hitters aren’t squaring him up, and when they do, the damage has been minimal.

Mize hasn’t had to do it alone, though, as Detroit’s offense has been more than capable of carrying the load. Averaging 4.78 runs per contest, including 29 across their last six outings, the lineup has been firing on all cylinders. Riley Greene has emerged as a force, posting a .269/.317/.512 slash line with 28 homers and 236 total bases. Spencer Torkelson has chipped in with 26 long balls and a .480 slugging percentage, while Wenceel Perez (.260/.316/.475) has provided sneaky pop. Add in the contributions of Zach McKinstry and Gleyber Torres, who’ve combined for 23 homers and 308 bases, and you’ve got a well-rounded offense that can hurt teams from top to bottom.
