Gleyber Torres and the Detroit Tigers will square off with Jeremy Peña and the Houston Astros on Tuesday night at Comerica Park.

Detroit enters this one riding high after hammering Houston 10-0 in Monday’s opener. The Tigers seized control in the fourth inning and never looked back, cruising to one of their most lopsided wins of the year. With that victory, Detroit improved to 74-53 and continues to keep pace in the AL postseason race.

The Astros, meanwhile, slipped to 69-56 after being blanked to start the series. Houston had a few chances early but couldn’t cash in, leaving them searching for answers at the plate heading into game two.

Detroit Tigers vs Houston Astros team news

Detroit Tigers team news

Torres has been steady in Detroit’s lineup, posting a .259 average with 18 doubles, 13 homers and 62 walks. He ranks among the league’s top 30 in on-base percentage, giving the Tigers a reliable presence at the plate. Spencer Torkelson remains one of the club’s biggest power threats, belting 26 long balls this season to go with 24 doubles. Riley Greene, though, has been the offensive engine, leading the Tigers in batting average (.265), home runs (29) and RBIs (92). Zach McKinstry has also chipped in with versatility and a .258 average, plus extra-base pop.

On the mound, lefty Tarik Skubal gets the call. He’s been sensational this year, boasting an 11-3 record with a sparkling 2.42 ERA over 152.1 innings. Skubal has piled up 190 strikeouts while keeping opponents to a meager .200 batting average. Even more impressive, he’s limited hitters to just 0.5 home runs per outing, an elite mark that has solidified him as one of baseball’s toughest arms.

Houston Astros team news

Houston’s lineup is still dangerous despite Monday’s setback. José Altuve leads the team with 22 home runs, ranking 33rd in the majors, and brings a modest three-game hitting streak into the contest. Peña has been the Astros’ most consistent bat this season, hitting .310 to pace the lineup. Yainer Díaz (.252, 17 homers) and Carlos Correa (.278 with 22 doubles) round out the supporting cast.

Taking the ball for the Astros is right-hander Hunter Brown, who has been every bit as sharp as Skubal. Brown enters with a 10-5 record and a matching 2.42 ERA across 24 starts. He’s struck out 164 hitters in 143.2 innings, though control has been a concern, five walks already this month. Still, he hasn’t surrendered a single home run in his last five appearances and has shown the ability to escape jams.
