  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The Pittsburgh Steelers are sticking with the man calling the shots in the front office, handing general manager Omar Khan a three-year contract extension that ties him to the franchise through the 2028 season, per NFL insider Adam Schefter.

"I am excited to announce we have signed Omar to a new three-year contract," said Steelers President Art Rooney II.

While financial specifics weren’t made public, Khan made it clear he's bullish on the team’s direction heading into 2025 and beyond.

Khan said: "I believe we are building a championship roster and look forward to the 2025 season and beyond as our goals continue to be to bring another Super Bowl to the City of Pittsburgh and our great fans."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

A familiar face in the Steelers' hierarchy, Khan joined the organization back in 2001 and gradually climbed the ladder before being named GM ahead of the 2022 season. Since then, Pittsburgh has posted a respectable 29-22 record and reached the postseason twice, but they've yet to break their playoff curse, with offensive struggles proving costly when it matters most.

This offseason, Khan didn't sit on his hands. He swung big, acquiring veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers, wideout DK Metcalf, and tight end Jonnu Smith, a trio with 13 Pro Bowl nods between them. And he didn’t stop there. On defense, Jalen Ramsey, a seven-time Pro Bowl corner, was brought in to bolster an already tough unit.

The Steelers' flurry of aggressive moves has bumped expectations, but there's still one major domino yet to fall: T.J. Watt. The star pass rusher is pushing for a new deal and skipped mandatory minicamp, though the front office insists locking him down remains a top priority and have no intention of dealing him.

    WHAT NEXT FOR STEELERS?

If Pittsburgh can patch things up with Watt, Khan's roster revamp could have the Steelers punching above their weight again in a fiercely competitive AFC North. It's a tall order, but Khan has proven he's not afraid to take big swings.
