Chelsea loanee power rankings: Ian Maatsen makes flying start in Dortmund - but the same can't be said for Armando Broja at Fulham

Chelsea have a chequered history with the loan system, only really reaping the rewards of shipping out their best and brightest in recent seasons, with several of Cobham's finest shining in the first team. It's been a long road to reach this point, with the noughties and 2010s particularly profligate; so much talent fell through the cracks and ultimately by the wayside amid Roman Abramovich's relentless pursuit of immediate success.

Things are different now, though, with Reece James, Levi Colwill and Trevoh Chalobah walking proof that there is a route to the first team for members of the loan army, and the club's newly-established emphasis on youth means there are opportunities to be had if you can prove yourself elsewhere.

However, for other, more experienced players, the loan system simply offers an escape route - a chance to reinvigorate their career in new surroundings, without any hope or expectation of ever returning to Stamford Bridge.

  • Lucas Bergstrom ChelseaGetty

    17Lucas Bergstrom (Brommapojkarna) - N/A 🌟

The newest member of Chelsea's loan army, young goalkeeper Bergstrom - who is already a full Finland international - headed to Sweden and joined journalists' nightmare IF Brommapojkarna at the end of February. He signed a new contract at Stamford Bridge before doing so.

  • Armando Broja - Fulham 2024Getty

    16Armando Broja (Fulham) - 2/10 🌟

It wasn't clear whether Chelsea would keep Broja for much of the January transfer window, but he finally left on deadline day to join their west London rivals Fulham on loan.

In truth, the move seems to be terribly timed, with 2021 signing Rodrigo Muniz finding unexpected form for the Cottagers pretty much as soon as Broja joined, hitting five goals in as many league games and therefore keeping the loanee out of the starting line-up.

  • Andrey Santos Chelsea Strasbourg 2023-24Getty

    15Andrey Santos (Strasbourg) - 2/10 ⬆️

It seemed for all the world that exciting young midfielder Santos would form part of the first-team picture at Chelsea this season under Mauricio Pochettino, but the club took the decision to ship him out late in the summer transfer window.

Things haven't gone to plan, with the Brazilian enduring a nightmare in the first half of the season at Nottingham Forest, only making a seven-minute cameo in the league at the end of October against Liverpool - one of just two appearances.

Santos was recalled in January and shipped out again, this time to BlueCo-owned Strasbourg in Ligue 1. He has only played 33 minutes of football so far in France, however, and there will be fears that this won't be the ideal atmosphere for him to develop either, with the fans protesting against their new owners and the the club in a dire run of form.

  • Lewis Hall Newcastle 2023-24Getty

    14Lewis Hall (Newcastle) - 3/10 ⬆️

The decision to send Hall to Newcastle on a loan deal with an obligation to buy caused uproar with the Chelsea faithful, but the versatile youngster isn't exactly flourishing in the north east. He scored a fine goal against Manchester United in the Carabao Cup, but was at fault in the ill-fated Champions League campaign in a defeat away to Borussia Dortmund.

His minutes were already limited in the league, but he hasn't even made it off the bench for Eddie Howe's side since mid-January, and he hasn't been used in the FA Cup either. Rises by default.

  • Charlie Webster Heerenveen 2023-24Getty

    13Charlie Webster (Heerenveen) - 3/10 ⬆️

Life at struggling Heerenveen has been a very short and sharp rollercoaster ride so far for Webster. After a brief cameo off the bench, the midfielder scored on his full Eredivisie debut before being promptly sent off for a late lunge.

The 19-year-old has played a bit-part role since, seeing his minutes increasingly limited since the festive period. Also climbs by default.

  • Tino Anjorin Portsmouth 2022-23Getty

    12Tino Anjorin (Portsmouth) - 3/10 ⬇️

A veteran of Chelsea's loan system at just 22 years old, Anjorin was being eased back from a serious ankle injury at League One table-toppers Portsmouth. After a string of brief cameos off the bench, the attacking midfielder made his first start since September 2022 in early October.

However, after scoring against Reading with an excellent finish, Anjorin has been sidelined again. Although his manager John Mousinho has said it is not serious enough for the loan to be cut short, Anjorin has not played since late October.

  • Gabriel Slonina Eupen 2023-24Getty Images

    11Gabriel Slonina (Eupen) - 4/10 ⬆️

Another Chelsea loanee who forms part of a side that is struggling overall, and is perhaps suffering as a result. United States prospect Slonina made an initial impression between the sticks for Eupen in Belgium as No.1 goalkeeper, but they have since slid down the table.

The 19-year-old kept back-to-back clean sheets in consecutive wins in January, but Eupen have lost six in a row since, and his post-shot xG minus goals allowed (the most reliable metric for measuring shot-stopping ability) has slipped to -2.6, with a save percentage of 67.3. Up by default, but at least he is playing regularly.

  • Hakim Ziyech Galatasaray 2023-24Getty

    10Hakim Ziyech (Galatasaray) - 4/10 ⬇️

Ziyech may have finally found an escape route from Stamford Bridge after his failed January 2023 transfer to Paris Saint-Germain, but he hasn't avoided the Blues' injury curse at Galatasaray.

He has had a strange time of it in Istanbul, playing a huge role in Manchester United's Champions League downfall as he scored twice and assisted in November's 3-3 draw. He followed that up with a goal in the league, but has not played since December as a result of the Africa Cup of Nations and an ankle injury.

Speculation was rife that he would seek a premature exit in January, but those rumours were refuted by his agent and he ended up staying put.

  • Mason Burstow Sunderland 2023-24Getty

    9Mason Burstow (Sunderland) - 5/10 ⬆️

Burstow was given a few opportunities in the Chelsea first team at the start of the season before being shipped out to Sunderland. It's been tough going for the rangy striker, who failed to score in the first half of the campaign despite starting regularly.

He was dropped for the festive period but has seen more action since, and he will have been mightily relieved to bag his first goal for the Black Cats in the win over Stoke at the end of January.

  • Kepa Arrizabalaga Real Madrid 2023-24Getty

    8Kepa Arrizabalaga (Real Madrid) - 5/10 ⬇️

Kepa leapt at the opportunity to join Real Madrid on loan following Thibaut Courtois' ACL injury, and things were initially going swimmingly. The goalkeeper kept six clean sheets in 13 appearances, maintaining a post-shot xG minus goals allowed of +2 in La Liga and a save percentage of 77, and it was reported Real wanted to keep him.

However, a muscle injury in November kept the 29-year-old sidelined for the best part of a month, with Andriy Lunin excelling in his absence and keeping him out of the team more or less ever since. Kepa has made a couple of appearances since our last update, but those included an error against Almeria, and he now faces a difficult summer, with neither Chelsea nor Real particularly keen to keep him.

  • David Datro Fofana 2023-24 Burnley ChelseaGetty

    7David Datro Fofana (Burnley) - 5/10 ⬆️

After a tempestuous spell with Union Berlin, where the striker was struggling with some personal issues and found himself in hot water after snubbing the now-former manager's handshake after being subbed in late October, Fofana is back in the Premier League with Burnley.

After scoring in his final appearance for Union, the Ivorian made a fast start to life at Turf Moor - picking up an assist against Man City before netting a match-saving brace against Fulham to earn a draw. Although he is a regular starter, that form has tailed off amid the Clarets' struggles.

  • Bashir Humphreys Swansea 2023-24Getty

    6Bashir Humphreys (Swansea City) - 5/10 ↔️

A member of Chelsea's loan army who seems to have a shot at making it in the first team, Humphreys has become an important part of Swansea's backline, with his now ex-manager Michael Duff hailing his "great mentality".

The highlight of his spell with the Swans to this point is undoubtedly his well-taken late winner against Norwich - a striker's finish for his first senior goal. However, he put in a poor showing in the 5-0 FA Cup defeat to Bournemouth and has been unable to turn around the club's indifferent form, not helped by a knock.

  • Angelo Gabriel Strasbourg Chelsea 2023-24Getty

    5Angelo Gabriel (Strasbourg) - 6/10 ⬇️

Angelo took to life in European football like a duck to water, with his performances seeing him snare Strasbourg's Player of the Month and the Ligue 1 Young Player of the Month awards for September. The 18-year-old demonstrated all the attributes that persuaded Chelsea to part with £13 million ($16m) to sign him from Santos.

However, his loan club's form has tailed off somewhat, and his progress was hampered by an adductor injury. Angelo is still yet to score in France, although he has collected two assists recently - including against Paris Saint-Germain. BlueCo's decision not to sign a new attacker in January - reportedly so as not to hinder his progress for Chelsea's benefit - did not go down well with the fans.

  • Harvey Vale Bristol Rovers 2023-24 ChelseaGetty

    4Harvey Vale (Bristol Rovers) - 7/10 ⬇️

After initially struggling to find his place at Bristol Rovers, Vale became a regular starter - but in the unfamiliar left-back role. He performed so well there that then-manager Joey Barton even compared him to Chelsea legend Ashley Cole. However, the outspoken coach has now been sacked, with Vale moved back to his natural wing position.

His form hasn't dropped off though, and his experience at the back has improved his defensive game, with Rovers reportedly keen to sign him permanently. He was hospitalised with a mystery condition following the loss to Fleetwood in February, but thankfully he is now back.

  • IAN MAATSEN BORUSSIA DORTMUND 20012024Getty Images

    3Ian Maatsen (Borussia Dortmund) - 7/10 🌟

Having failed to make his breakthrough back at Chelsea in the first half of 2023-24, Maatsen may well have found a home at Borussia Dortmund.

The versatile wide man has made a fast start to life in Germany, starting every game for the Schwarzgelben. Dortmund have only lost once in that time as they push for a Champions League place, with Maatsen already providing two assists and a goal in his nine appearances despite playing at left-back.

  • Omari Hutchinson Ipswich 2023-24Getty

    2Omari Hutchinson (Ipswich Town) - 7/10 ⬆️

Having been used as a rotation option or substitute for the majority of the season and showing flashes of his potential, Hutchinson is making himself un-droppable in with his red-hot form in recent weeks, as Ipswich push for automatic promotion.

The attacker made five goal contributions in as many games in February, with the Blues closing the gap to Leicester at the top of the Championship to just three points. Speaking to the BBCrecently, he said: "I've been working really hard and it's all paying off now. I'm really buzzing with the goals and helping the team."

  • Lukaku esultanza Feyenoord RomaGetty

    1Romelu Lukaku (Roma) - 7/10 ↔️

In truth this is a loan in name only, with Lukaku certain to never pull on the blue shirt ever again following an acrimonious and protracted second-consecutive loan exit last summer.

Since plundering five goals in six league games at the start of the season for Roma, Lukaku has slowed up, although he has continued his remarkable goal-scoring record in the Europa League, where he has seven goals in nine games.

Jose Mourinho has, of course, been sacked, but Lukaku is back in form under Daniele De Rossi, moving into double figures for Serie A goals at the start of March and picking up two assists in as many games.
