Najee Harris was among five people injured during a Fourth of July fireworks mishap at a gathering in his hometown of Antioch, California. The incident occurred on the 2200 block of Spanos Street, near Linden Way, and was confirmed by the Contra Costa Fire Protection District, per CBS Bay Area.
Of the five individuals hurt, one suffered serious injuries while the rest, including Harris, escaped with only minor wounds. Four were taken to a nearby hospital by emergency personnel, while one opted to seek treatment on their own. The Mercury News reported that Harris was evaluated at John Muir Hospital in Concord before heading to Stanford Hospital, though it's unclear whether he was transported by ambulance or private vehicle.
Speculation quickly spread online regarding the extent of Harris's injury, with some unverified claims even suggesting the Chargers RB had lost an eye. However, his agent Doug Hendrickson calmed those fears, confirming that Harris sustained only a superficial eye injury and is on track to suit up for the 2025 NFL season.
The incident comes shortly after Harris inked a one-year deal worth $5.25 million with Los Angeles, which includes up to $4 million in performance-based incentives—potentially pushing the total value of the contract to $9.25 million.
This close call evokes memories of former Giants pass rusher Jason Pierre-Paul, whose infamous fireworks accident in 2015 resulted in the loss of multiple fingers. Unlike that case, Harris appears to have dodged a major setback and will look to move forward without missing a beat.
