'That's why Harry Kane is even stronger!' - Bayern Munich star's 'outstanding' interplay bringing out the playmaker in English striker

  • Matthaus highlights Bayern's assets

Matthaus has identified the "outstanding" form of Gnabry as the key reason why Kane has become "even stronger" since joining Bayern Munich. Speaking on Sky90, Matthaus praised the burgeoning partnership between the two forwards, which has been a cornerstone of Bayern's dominant start to the season under Vincent Kompany. Bayern have won their first five matches, scoring an incredible 22 goals while conceding just three to establish a dominant position atop the table.

    Matthaus explains the Kane-Gnabry dynamic

Matthaus detailed the tactical interplay that has allowed both players to thrive. "Serge is playing outstandingly at the moment because he has this interplay with Kane up front. And that's why Harry Kane is even stronger than he has been in the last two years," he explained.

The former Ballon d'Or winner highlighted Kane's tendency to drop deep into a playmaker role, noting that this doesn't leave Bayern without a focal point. "He also gets possession of the ball as the so-called number 10 – and yet his position is occupied up front because Gnabry is up front," Matthaus added.

  • Gnabry's revival under Kompany

Gnabry has been in superb form, contributing three goals and two assists in the Bundesliga so far. The 30-year-old has established himself as a key player in a new role for Kompany, starting in six of eight competitive matches this season, partly capitalising on an injury to Jamal Musiala. His resurgence has been a significant boost for the German champions, adding another potent weapon to their attack.

  • Uncertain future amid contract situation

Despite his excellent form, Gnabry's long-term future at the Allianz Arena remains uncertain. His contract is set to expire at the end of the season in June 2026, and Matthaus believes he would have to accept a pay cut to secure an extension.

Gnabry himself remains calm about the situation. "I'm very relaxed. I'm happy that things are going so well, that we're playing so well. And we'll see about everything else when the time comes," the attacker recently told Sky.

    What next for Bayern's attack?

The flourishing Kane-Gnabry partnership will continue to be vital for Bayern as they navigate a busy schedule of domestic and European fixtures. However, the impending return of Musiala from injury will present Kompany with a significant selection headache. The club will also need to address Gnabry's contract situation in the coming months to secure the future of a key attacking asset.
