Explained: Why Referee Jarred Gillett will wear head-mounted 'RefCam' camera during Manchester United's clash with Crystal Palace

For the first time in history, the referee will be wearing a video camera to officiate a Premier League game as Jarred Gillett is all set to officiate Manchester United's clash against Crystal Palace on Monday using a head-mounted 'RedCam' camera, according to BBC.

The report also added that the video footage collected from the camera will be used in a one-off programme to highlight the incidents that happen while officiating a Premier League match. However, the footage won't be broadcast live.

In February 2024, German referee Daniel Schlager wore a similar camera during a Bundesliga clash between Eintracht Frankfurt and Wolfsburg and the footage was used in a show called 'Referees Mic'd up - Bundesliga'.

Last year, Premier League official Rob Jones used a 'RefCam' while conducting a 2023 Summer Series clash between Chelsea and Brighton in Philadelphia, US.

The Red Devils, who have won just once in their last five Premier League outings, will aim to get back to winning ways at Selhurst Park on Monday night, however, they are set to miss several first-team players due to injuries.
