  • WHAT HAPPENED?

    Former Barcelona midfield starlet Ilaix Moriba has joined La Liga side Getafe on loan from RB Leipzig, the club confirmed on Monday. The Guinea international is currently with his national team at the Africa Cup of Nations 2023 and will join his new club once his team's participation in the continental championship is over.

  • WHAT GETAFE SAID

    The official statement from the club confirming the player's loan deal read, "Getafe Football Club has reached an agreement with RB Leipzig for the incorporation on loan of Guinean footballer Ilaix Moriba until the end of the season. At 20 years old, he has a wealth of experience in professional football, especially in La Liga, where he has played a total of 52 games in which he has distributed five assists.

    "In the 2021/22 season, Moriba coincided with our coach, José Bordalás, giving a great performance at Valencia CF, where they reached the final of the Copa del Rey. Ilaix, who is with Guinea for the Africa Cup, will arrive in Getafe at the end of his team's participation in said competition."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

    Moriba graduated from La Masia in 2019 and made his senior debut for the Catalan giants during the 2020-21 season. In August 2021, the youngster headed to the Bundesliga to join RB Leipzig for a reported transfer fee of €16 million. Since January 2022, the midfielder has been on back-to-back loan spells at Valencia and only returned to the German club ahead of the ongoing 2023-24 season.

    Mason Greenwood's club have been enjoying a good run of form in recent times having lost just once in their last five games across all competitions. The club will be next seen in action on January 21 when they take on Osasuna in La Liga.
