Spitting at a staff member, elbowing a team-mate and smashing a TV: Why Jonny was exiled from Wolves first-team training

Wolves have confirmed that Jonny will train away from the first-team squad until the end of January after a "training-ground incident" that initially saw him told to stay away from the club ahead of the team's 2-1 defeat to Arsenal. Jonny swung an elbow at Under-21s forwardTawanda Chirewa after being riled by a challenge in training. The defender also spat at a member of staff who tried to calm the situation, before smashing a television and causing damage to a table in the players' room after being ordered off the pitch, according to The Athletic.

Jonny has apologised but his actions mean he may well have played his last game for the Premier League club. The January transfer window allows the defender the opportunity to seek a move away from Molineux in the coming weeks, which may be the best solution for both parties. Wolves have confirmed he can continue training with the club and can feature for the Under-21s should he desire.

Hobbs said in a statement: "As people have become aware, there was an incident with Jonny last week, and since then I’ve sat down with him, he’s apologised, and we have outlined the way forward. We had a conversation and have agreed that at least until the end of the January window he won’t be part of the first-team group. He will still be training at the club and, if he chooses, he can play for the under-21s to keep up his match sharpness, and I think, knowing him, he’ll probably do that.

“This is a guy who has been a great servant to the football club. One incident doesn’t define the role he’s played during the successful times and the man he is day to day around the place. Everybody has moments and that’s all it was, but we have to deal with it and move forward for the wider group.

“It makes sense to take it up to then (the end of January) because a lot of things can change between now and then, and then we’ll sit down, talk again and decide the way forward. December’s a busy month with lots of points to play for and lots of games we feel we can be really competitive in. That always has to be the focus.”

Jonny has a contract with Wolves until 2025 but could well be on the move in January. The defender was a key player under previous manager Nuno Espirito Santo but has only managed four minutes of Premier League action so far this season.
