    WHAT HAPPENED?

England came into the Euros as one of the favourites to win the tournament, and while they have made it to the semi-finals, the team has struggled tactically with players like Kane and Phil Foden having been the main victims in the squad. However, Southgate is not of the same opinion.

  • WHAT SOUTHGATE SAID

Speaking to the media, Southgate said: "I thought he [Kane] did a super job for the team [against Switzerland]. He is perhaps not flowing, as he is arriving in those deeper areas, but he is still playing an immense part for the group."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

There have been a lot of calls for Southgate to drop the England captain as they approach the semi-finals of the tournament. However, the chances of Kane being left out for either Ivan Toney or Ollie Watkins are slim.

  • WHAT NEXT FOR KANE?

With either Watkins or Toney unable to replicate Kane's ability to link up with midfielders to progress the ball, Southgate will almost certainly keep Kane as the starter, regardless of the criticism, when they take on the Netherlands in the semi-final on July 10 at Signal Iduna Park in Dortmund.
