A curious encounter between two very different Bavarian clubs saw Bayern's back line beaten three times, yet they still scored five in a relatively comfortable win over Augsburg and took maximum points. Pavard struck twice during the first half after the champions had fallen behind early on, but the visitors 'won' the second half 2-1 despite being on the back foot throughout. As a result of this win, Bayern go three points clear at the top ahead of today's Revierderby featuring second-placed Dortmund.

57' Gikiewicz gets away with almost losing the ball near his goal-line, as Mane presses furiously and forces the goalkeeper to stay calm before clearing the ball.

55' JUST OVER! Vargas almost makes an impact following his introduction as a half-time substitute, as he sees a shot from the edge of the box zip over the bar, with Sommer scrambling in order to make a save if required!

54' CLOSE! After Musiala has a well-struck shot charged down by Iago, the ball ultimately finds its way to Mane again. On this occasion, the Senegalese star lashes his 20-yard attempt narrowly over the crossbar!

While Bayern are unbeaten in their last 85 Bundesliga matches when leading at half-time, dating back to February 2019, Augsburg have a record of W0, D1, L3 when trailing at the interval this season. That sums up the size of the visitors' task during the second half.

Stirred by a second-minute setback, Bayern have responded well to going behind early on and a flurry of first-half goals sees them sailing towards victory, even with 45 minutes left to play. Augsburg applied pressure in the opening stages and were rewarded by Berisha's latest goal against the champions, but they subsequently found themselves picked apart by the home side's set-piece skills and clinical finishing - surely there's no way back after the break?

40' Following Kimmich's latest corner, Gnabry's shot from the centre of the box flies high and wide to the left of the goal.

His cross is headed down by De Ligt, then breaks for Pavard 10 yards out. The Frenchman coolly hitch-kicks the ball past a helpless Gikiewicz and into the bottom-left corner: 3-1!

33' Perhaps ill-advisedly, Sane tries his luck from distance, only to see his wild effort rise well over the crossbar, bringing groans from the home fans.

32' Sommer is hardly troubled by a tame Maier shot from the edge of the area, which the Swiss keeper saves in the bottom-left corner of his goal.

31' Following their bright start, the visitors are increasingly unable to get a foothold in this match. Bayern look fairly comfortable now.

13' To a chorus of jeers and whistles, the referee turns down an appeal for a Bayern free-kick, then after the hosts have reclaimed the ball, Gnabry picks up the ball on the left. He jinks inside to tee up a 20-yard shot but sends it spiralling over the crossbar.

11' SAVE! Gikiewicz makes a sharp stop at his near post, after Musiala squeezes in a shot from a tight angle near the left byline, having been played in by Davies. Soon after, the flag goes up to indicate a marginal offside in any case.

8' After Musiala springs a counter-attack through the centre, his ball reaches Gnabry on the right. However, the latter's attempt to pick out Sane, who is charging through the middle towards the area, lacks accuracy and the move breaks down.

6' Gikiewicz makes a routine save in the centre of his goal, after Cancelo receives the ball from Sane on the right side of the box and then fails to fully catch his low shot.

4' Not only has Berisha has now scored the opening goal in six Bundesliga matches this season, but he has also found the net in all three of his games against Bayern to date.

1' A long throw-in from Gumny is flicked on in the area, forcing Bayern to concede an early corner. From the inswinging set-piece, Sommer is required to punch the ball clear to safety from next to his near post.

Augsburg's Bavaria-born striker Mergim Berisha scored the winner when they last faced Bayern in the Bundesliga - a rare success against their more illustrious neighbours. Die Fuggerstadter's coach Enrico Maassen recorded his first home win in September's reverse fixture, and more recently, a 2-1 success against Werder Bremen last week took his team eight points clear of the relegation zone. Ahead of today's game, Augsburg may have won all four of their home games in 2023 but have lost all four on the road.

Aiming to stay ahead of their nearest title rivals by picking up more points today, Bayern Munich lead the Bundesliga by virtue of goal difference ahead of Borussia Dortmund. Victory against Stuttgart last week took Julian Nagelsmann's side back above BVB by the slenderest of margins, and the latter will play later on today, meeting Schalke 04 in the Revierderby. Bayern beat Paris Saint-Germain 2-0 on Wednesday to reach the last eight of the Champions League, and must now tackle their regional rivals.
