Hamann has 'limited sympathy' for flashy Karius following Liverpool horror show

Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius has received “limited sympathy” from compatriot Dietmar Hamann on the back of his Champions League final horror show.

The 24-year-old was largely responsible for the Reds coming unstuck against Real Madrid, with two glaring errors contributing significantly to a 3-1 defeat.

Karius has shouldered the blame and apologised for his performance in the wake of a nightmare evening in Kiev, with a number of Anfield colleague having been quick to rally around him.

It is, however, expected that Liverpool will be dipping back into the transfer market this summer for a new No. 1, with Hamann concerned by the pre and post-match actions of the club’s current custodian.

The 2005 Champions League winner told Sport Bild after witnessing Karius’ tears at full-time: “My sympathy with Karius is limited.

“We don't have to discuss that he decided the final with his two mistakes.

“Something like that can happen to a professional footballer. But what I didn't like was his behaviour afterwards.

“To publicly show his suffering after the final whistle was just as unnecessary as his tearful asking for forgiveness from the Reds fans.”

Hamann also suggested that Karius may be paying the price for a flashy lifestyle away from the field that he has struggled to justify throughout his time at Liverpool.

The former Reds midfielder added: “Liverpool fans forgive their stars just as well as any other, the anthem 'You'll Never Walk Alone' is part of life out at the club.

“With one exception: when your ego doesn't match your performance.

“Karius drives through Liverpool with the personalised number plates 'LK1' and makes waves in the city whenever he steps out.

“Having airs like that is something Cristiano Ronaldo, alias CR7, can pull off in Madrid, because he has won the Champions League five times.

“Someone like Karius has not achieved anything yet in his career and should be happy to have been given the chance by [Jurgen] Klopp at a world-class club.”
