Fabian McCarthy: Kaizer Chiefs need to work on understanding and communication at the back

Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Fabian McCarthy says Amakhosi have to bag their fourth Premier Soccer League (PSL) win in a row.

The Soweto giants are heading to Makhulong Stadium to face Highlands Park on Tuesday night and McCarthy tips his former side to make it four out of four.

"I think they have to get their fourth win, it's a must because they want to challenge for the league,” McCarthy told Goal.

"The break wasn't that long, but it was good for small injuries to heal and for them to reflect as well as planning to continue with the momentum because they picking up nicely. It was time to work on togetherness and consistency,” he added.

Speaking of the break, coach Giovanni Solinas led his side to three back-to-back wins a week ago as they netted eight goals and conceded just once coming up against the likes of Cape Town City, Free State Stars and AmaZulu.

However, the former centre back says communication, understanding especially at the back still has to improve for the Glamour Boys.

“It think for the coach, it was time to sort out the understanding and communication at the back because going forward Chiefs have no problems,” he continued.

"Lebogang (Manyama) is settling down, Dax (Andriamirado Andrianarimanana) is there and they are looking good upfront  for me,” he noted.

“But it's also looking good even at the back because they have conceded once and it's very important to maintain that,” he urged.

Heading to Makhulong Stadium in Tembisa, the ex-Bafana Bafana star reckons the game will be a full house, but the technical team must also plan for the upcoming match against Polokwane City next weekend.

The Soweto giants are set to face Rise and Shine behind closed doors at the Moses Mabhida Stadium. 

"It will be a great match at Makhulong and it will be more good for them to win before heading to Mabhida for an empty one,” said the former Bloemfontein Celtic defender.

"I do not have a history where we played behind closed doors at Chiefs. I don't think it will be easy because the players are used to big crowds on the stands,” he reflected.

“I think players such as (Itumeleng) Khune, Khama (Billiat) and (Willard) Katsande are not used to an empty stand, but the coach must come up with a plan to get them ready,” advised the Vryburg-born legend.

"For me, organising a match gainst an NFD team at the FNB Stadium will possibly help to adjust the players' mindset. Maybe get good referees and take it as an official match to ensure they are ready for the clash in Durban,” he continued.

"I think that is the only way because they are used to playing with no supporters at training, but an official match is different,” he concluded.
