Lionesses icon Jill Scott helps Man City announce arrival of Sydney Lohmann from Bayern Munich after sweary encounter in Euro 2022 final

Lohmann, aged 25, joins the club after spending all of her professional career to date with Bayern, whom she debuted for as a 16-year-old. In the last eight years, the midfielder has won six major honours, including four Bundesliga titles, but departs to embark on a new challenge in England and the Women's Super League.

Lohmann's arrival adds necessary depth to Man City's midfield, following the surprise departure of Jill Roord earlier this summer. Roord signed for childhood club Twente for an undisclosed fee back in May, explaining that it was a move made to try and help her rediscover her love for the game. In Lohmann, though, City have a player who can bring the athleticism, goal-scoring threat and work rate on both sides of the ball that they lost in Roord.

Man City put together a hilarious announcement video for Lohmann, too, involving Lionesses icon Jill Scott. The former England midfielder had a memorably sweary encounter with the Germany star in the 2022 European Championships final, one which the club fully tapped into to reveal their third signing of the summer transfer window.

Speaking about the move, Lohmann said: "I have a really positive feeling here at Manchester City. I’ve always had the thought to play abroad at some point in my career and I just had the feeling that this year was the right time to do that. I’m really thankful for the time at Bayern Munich and I’m happy that I gained those experiences, but I think always when you go somewhere else, a big step like that, it’s always good for your personal growth."

Therese Sjogran, Man City's director of women's football, added: "We’re really pleased to bring a player of Sydney’s quality and stature to the club. She is no stranger to success and her record in Germany and on the world stage speaks for itself. She’s a proven winner but also someone who’s still hungry to achieve more at the top level, just like City."

It's been a difficult few years for Man City, whose trophyless season last term was their third in a row. The way the Cityzens' WSL title charge fell apart was particularly concerning, with the club opting to make a shocking managerial change in March, just five days before their League Cup final, as a result. Bringing in former head coach Nick Cushing on an interim basis didn't bear fruit either, though, with the team still not able to get back on track as they missed out on Champions League football for the coming campaign.

Man City will hope things can be different under new head coach Andree Jeglertz, who has spent the last two years in charge of Denmark, and with signings like Lohmann coming through the door.
