Scoring a hat-trick is always special and it is even more so if it is struck while playing for the national team.&nbsp;
10&nbsp;players on 13&nbsp;different occassions have scored three goals in a single match since India's first international encounter back in 1933. In this article, we take a detailed look at those instances.

Of the 10, Sunil Chhetri and Puran Bahadur Thapa scored their hat-tricks on Indian soil while the rest achived their feat overseas.

In 1938, the India national football team went for its first-ever international tour to play against Australia. Although in 1934, India did travel to South Africa, they played only against South Africa-born Indians and not against the&nbsp;Bafanas.&nbsp; &nbsp;
Four years later, the team that travelled down under comprised of mostly Indians and a couple of British-Indians including R Lumsden. He scored three goals against the&nbsp;Socceroos on September 24, 1938, at the Royal Agricultural Show Ground in Sydney.&nbsp;

Interestingly, this remains&nbsp;the only instance when India have lost a game in spite of a player scoring a hat-trick as they went down 5-4 at the final whistle.&nbsp;In fact, he scored two more hat-tricks against Ipswich and Granville in the same tour but those were unofficial friendlies.&nbsp;

Even A Rahim netted four goals against New South Wales in a 6-4 loss but that too was in an unofficial friendly.&nbsp;

R Lumsden (1938)

Sheoo Mewalal scored the first hat-trick post-independence in a 4-0 win against Burma in the Colombo Quadrangular tournament.&nbsp;Pansanttom Venkatesh netted the other.
In that tournament, Mewalal scored five of India's seven goals.&nbsp;

After three matches both India and Pakistan were on same points. It was stated that&nbsp;in the event of a tie on points, 'goal average' would be the difference-maker. But since both the teams had not conceded any goal,&nbsp;it was ruled&nbsp;that the trophy should be shared. The fact that India had scored more goals than Pakistan was ignored.&nbsp;

Pakistan won the&nbsp;coin toss which ultimately&nbsp;decided who&nbsp;would go on to keep the silverware&nbsp;for the first six months.

Sheoo Mewalal (1952)

Puran Bahadur Thapa scored three goals against Pakistan in the Calcutta Quadrangular tournament at the Eden Gardens on December 26, 1954. India won the match 3-1.&nbsp;
Under manager&nbsp;Syed Abdul Rahim India became unbeaten champions. Thapa was the top-scorer with four goals.&nbsp;

Two days later an&nbsp;exhibition match was organised, where India went up against The Rest. The Blue Tigers won the match with a 5-3 scoreline with Gulab Singh scoring all the goals.&nbsp;

Puran Bahadur Thapa (1954)

Neville D'Souza scored three goals against Australia in a 4-2 win in the 1956 Summer Olympics to fire India to the semi-finals.&nbsp;
He became the first Asian to score a hat-trick in the Olympics. D'Souza also found the net against Yugoslavia in the semi-finals but India went down 4-1.&nbsp;

Marto Gracias scored three goals against Hong Kong in the 1967 Merdeka Tournament in Malaysia.&nbsp;
In that edition, the trophy was shared between Yangzee FC of South Korea and Burma (now Myanmar).&nbsp;

Subhash Bhowmick was the sixth player to score a hat-trick for India. He achieved this feat against Philippines in a thumping 5-1 win.
It was India's only win in the tournament as they bowed out from the group stages. Burma went on to win the Merdeka tournament in 1971.&nbsp;

The 1970 Asian Games bronze medal winner netted a hat-trick against Thailand in 1974 in a 4-2 win at the Merdeka Cup.&nbsp;Bernard Pereira scored the other goal.&nbsp;
India bowed out from the group stages and Malaysia won the tournament beating South Korea 1-0.&nbsp;

Shabbir Ali scored a hat-trick for India against Indonesia in a 3-1 win in 1976 in the Merdeka Tournament.&nbsp;
India had a forgetful outing in that edition as they conceded 27 goals in just six matches.&nbsp;

Malaysia went on to win the tournament beating Japan 2-0 in the final.&nbsp;

I M Vijayan scored his first hat-trick for India against arch-rivals Pakistan in a 5-2 win at the 1999 South Asian Federation Games.&nbsp;He took just 19 minutes to score his hat-trick.
In the same competition, he scored his second hat-trick against Bhutan, firing India to a 3-0 win.&nbsp;

India topped the group but crashed out to eventual champions Bangladesh in the semi-finals. However, they won the Bronze medal match against Maldives 3-1 with Vijayan once again scoring the equaliser.&nbsp;Syed Sabir Pasha and&nbsp;Raman Vijayan scored two late goals to help India secure third-position.&nbsp;

Sunil Chhetri is the only player to score three hat-tricks for India, all on home soil.
His first came against Tajikistan in a 4-1 win in&nbsp;the 2008 AFC Challenge Cup final.

He once again netted a hat-trick two years later and this time in a friendly against Vietnam. India won the match 3-1.

In the Intercontinental Cup match against Chinese Taipei, he repeated the feat to fire India to a thumping 5-0 win at the Mumbai Arena in 2018.&nbsp;
