How to watch today's Luxembourg vs Northern Ireland World Cup qualification game: Live stream, TV channel, and start time

Northern Ireland return to the World Cup qualifyingstage on Thursday when they lock horns with Luxembourg, marking their first competitive outing in nearly two years.

With Germany looming large in Group A, both nations will know the importance of drawing first blood in this opener if they are to keep their dreams of a spot at next summer's finals alive. That said, the road ahead looks anything but straightforward.

When these two last met in November's Nations League clash, Michael O'Neill's men let a two-goal cushion slip as the game ended 2-2, a reminder that Luxembourg are no longer the easy touch they once were. Sweden found that out the hard way too, falling 1-0 in a friendly, proof that the Grand Duchy have shed their reputation as Europe’s whipping boys. Organized, disciplined, and stubborn at the back, they won’t roll over easily.

Northern Ireland, meanwhile, will take encouragement from their narrow 1-0 win over Iceland in their latest friendly. Still, while Windsor Park has often been their fortress, O’Neill’s side haven’t always traveled well – and that remains their biggest hurdle heading into this one.

Here, GOAL brings you everything you need to know about how to watch, including TV channel, streaming details and more.

Luxembourg team news

Luxembourg will welcome back some familiar faces, with experienced goalkeeper Anthony Moris, now plying his trade in the Saudi Pro League, returning after snubbing a call-up in June. Rising star Yvandro Borges Sanches is also back in the fold following injury, giving new coach Jeff Strasser extra attacking spark in his first squad since replacing Luc Holtz.

Northern Ireland team news

Northern Ireland boss Michael O’Neill has been dealt another setback with Paul Smyth pulling out of the squad through injury, adding to an already worrying list of absentees. The manager was already missing defensive trio Daniel Ballard, Brodie Spencer and Ciaron Brown, midfielder Jordan Thompson, as well as goalkeepers Pierce Charles and Conor Hazard.

As a result, Bailey Peacock-Farrell has been recalled and will battle it out with Luke Southwood for the No.1 jersey, while uncapped defenders Kofi Balmer, Ryan Johnson and Jamie McDonnell have also been drafted in to bolster the ranks.

There is still firepower to lean on, with Isaac Price in electric form, netting seven goals in his last seven outings for the national side. Northern Ireland's opponents, Luxembourg, however, bring threats of their own. Danel Sinani, currently starring at St Pauli, leads their line, while Gerson Rodrigues—who struck against Northern Ireland last autumn—remains suspended by the Luxembourg FA.
