Flamengo are one of the hottest teams in Brazil right now, sitting pretty at the top of the Brasileirão with a fearsome tally of 31 goals scored and just seven conceded. Their domestic dominance is undeniable, and they might quietly welcome the fact that their Copa Libertadores last-16 clash comes against familiar opposition from home soil in Internacional. Still, a recent setback in the Copa do Brasil may sting — but it could also clear the decks for an all-out focus on South America’s biggest prize.
Their route to the knockouts was anything but straightforward. Grouped with Deportivo Táchira, Central Córdoba, and LDU Quito, Flamengo only squeezed through in second place on goal difference, with all three sides locked on 11 points. Along the way, they also flew the CONMEBOL banner at the Club World Cup, making it to the last 16 before a 4-2 thriller against Bayern Munich ended their run.
That journey still had its standout moments, including big wins over Chelsea and Espérance Tunis. Now, their attention is fixed on reclaiming the Libertadores trophy they last hoisted in 2022, when they edged Atlético Paranaense in Guayaquil.
Internacional, meanwhile, have endured a stop-start domestic campaign. Sitting 13th in the Brasileirão at the time of writing, they've struggled for consistency, but their Libertadores form tells a different story. They topped a tricky group featuring Brazilian rivals Bahia, Colombia’s Atlético Nacional, and Nacional of Uruguay, collecting three wins, two draws, and a single defeat to finish in pole position.
With their league hopes faltering and their Copa do Brasil campaign already over, the Libertadores has become Inter's golden ticket to silverware this year. But standing in their way is a Flamengo side in red-hot form, making this a huge test of Colorado’s quality, resilience, and belief. To pull off an upset, they'll need to deliver their very best over both legs.

Team news & squads
Flamengo team news
Flamengo are set to deploy their trademark, attack-heavy 4-3-3 formation, banking on the blistering pace of their wingers and the vision of their creative midfielders to unlock Internacional's defensive lines.
However, they will have to navigate a few injury setbacks. Danilo is sidelined with a thigh injury, while Nicolás De La Cruz is dealing with physical discomfort and will be monitored closely. Erick Pulgar remains a long-term absentee with a broken foot and is not expected back until late August 2025.
Internacional team news
Internacional are likely to counter with a compact, disciplined 4-4-2 setup, prioritising defensive solidity and looking to strike on the break. Their squad, though, is also feeling the strain. Johan Carbonero is nursing a groin injury, with a return likely later this month, while Richard Candido is recovering from a head injury. Gabriel Mercado is expected back from a calf problem by late August, and Óscar Romero should shake off a thigh issue by mid-month.
In goal, Ivan is working his way back from a meniscus injury and is targeting an early September return. Meanwhile, both Fernando (knee) and Bruno Gomes (cruciate ligament) are long-term casualties, sidelined until at least early October.
