Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard urged not to give up on management despite Plymouth and Saudi failures as Alan Shearer tells Liverpool legend to follow Frank Lampard's footsteps

Rooney and Gerrard were forced to quit their respective jobs with Plymouth Argyle and Al-Ettifaq within a gap of one month after the England legends failed miserably with their respective. While Gerrard lasted at the Saudi Pro League club for one and a half seasons, Rooney was shown the door within six months of assuming his role in the Championship.

In the past, Gerrard has managed clubs like Rangers and Aston Villa, while Rooney has been in charge of Derby County, Birmingham City and DC United. However, neither of the ex-Three Lions stars has managed to make a mark as a manager. Despite their dismal track record in management, Newcastle and England icon Shearer has urged his compatriots to not give up on their pursuit of coaching and instead follow Frank Lampard's footsteps.

Speaking to Betfair, Shearer said: "Steven Gerrard has left Saudi Arabia, and I hope he gets back into management in the UK. He clearly doesn't have to work, but I hope it's not the last we've seen of him or Wayne Rooney.

"I hope someone somewhere gives Gerrard the opportunity to go in and manage just like Frank is doing really well at Coventry now. Frank has taken Coventry from the relegation places really close to the play-offs so I hope, very much like Frank, that Gerrard gets another job somewhere in the game."

The former Liverpool star was closely linked with a move to Carlisle United after returning to the UK, but the League Two side later appointed Mark Hughes as their next head coach. The United legend, on the other hand, will form part of Amazon Prime’s coverage of the Champions League. He will make his on-screen debut for the global streaming service when Manchester City face Real Madrid in the first leg of their heavyweight knockout phase play-off tie.
