It came at a critical moment: Luciano Spalletti had taken the squad into a pre-match retreat following a damaging 2-0 defeat at Genoa, and fan protests outside the stadium before kick-off underlined just how thin patience had grown.

The result offered more than three points. Alajbegovic, who had been used sparingly by Spalletti, delivered the kind of performance that makes him difficult to leave out.
