Daniel Maldini has followed in his father and grandfather's footsteps by scoring his first goal for AC Milan.

The 19-year-old, son of Rossoneri legend Paolo and grandson of former Milan defender and coach Cesare, headed in the opening goal of his side's 2-1 win at Spezia on Saturday.

Attacking midfielder Maldini's goal comes on his first Serie A start for the San Siro outfit, having only made appearances from the bench in the Italian top flight previously.

Who are the other Maldini's to play for AC Milan?

The Maldini family are something of a dynasty in Italian football.

Daniel's grandfather, Cesare, spent 12 years playing for the Rossoneri between 1954 and 1966. He made over 400 appearances in all competitions and helped them to four Serie A titles and European Cup success in 1963.

After finishing his playing career, he became the team's assistant coach under head coach Nereo Rocco. After Rocco's departure, Cesare took charge as head coach until 1974 and went on to coach Parma and the Italy national team before another brief spell as Milan's interim manager in 2001.

During that spell, the team's captain was Cesare's son, Paolo, who had already been established as a Milan hero.

The younger Maldini spent his entire professional career with the Rossoneri after coming through the club's youth system.

He made his senior debut in 1984 and stayed on until 2009, during which time they were crowned Italian champions seven times and European champions on five occasions.

Just like his father, Paolo stayed on at Milan after retiring from the game and has been the club's technical director since 2019.

How have Milan performed so far this season?

Milan's victory at Spezia puts them on top of Serie A.

Stefano Pioli's team have 16 points from their first six matches of the season, but they could be overtaken by Napoli, who sit one point behind and face Cagliari on Sunday.
