Rhys Williams reveals Graham Arnold contact as he eyes Socceroos recall

He might now be playing in the Middle East for Saudi Arabian club Al Qadsiah, but Rhys Williams is determined to play again for the Socceroos.

While his last season with Melbourne Victory saw injury rule him out of the grand final, the 30-year-old defender had been impressing and earned a move abroad over the off-season.

Having not played for the Socceroos since 2013 when injury denied him a World Cup spot, Williams revealed new green and gold coach Graham Arnold has been keeping tabs on him. 

"A bit of contact with his staff just about a few bits and pieces, about how training is,” Williams told the Daily Football Show.

“But nothing major. I think the main thing is once you’re doing well and playing regularly, then hopefully you’ll be in his eyes for the next camp.

“That’s all I can keep doing now. I’m pleased he got the job.

“He’s a man who knows Australian football inside out and he’s got a proven record.”

Williams returned to Australia in 2016 after a tough few years in England and went on to impress for both Perth Glory and Victory.

Now playing regularly at club level, Williams has been able to set his sights back on the Socceroos from the heat of Saudi Arabia. 

"I’ve got one eye on the national team again," he said.

"I feel like last year I was doing well and maybe I would have got a chance, but it never happened.

“So I get my head down and keep working hard and I’ve seen this option as maybe a way back in.

“All in all, I can’t have any hard feelings about this move because I’m really enjoying it, I’m really enjoying the competition and the fight over here."
