Revealed: Martin Zubimendi DOES have a release clause - but Real Sociedad don't fear January exit amid Liverpool & Man City transfer links

Zubimendi’s consistent performances in La Liga and his role in Spain's Euro 2024 triumph have drawn interest from Premier League heavyweights Liverpool and Manchester City, as well as Arsenal. In the Euro 2024 final, Zubimendi showcased his composure and skill when stepping in for the injured Rodri, further boosting his reputation on the international stage. However, Real Sociedad’s hierarchy is determined to retain their academy graduate, whose loyalty to the club has been evident in his actions.

Real Sociedad sporting director Roberto Olabe has expressed his confidence in retaining Zubimendi in January. Speaking to Estadio Deportivo, Olabe stated: “Zubimendi has a release clause, yes… but it’s always the player to decide and he’s been showing how committed he is to our project. So far, we’ve seen how he has behaved and I don’t predict any ‘scares’ in January for Zubimendi to leave”.

It had been reported that the midfielder’s current contract includes a €60 million (£50.1 million) release clause.

During the summer transfer window, Liverpool identified Zubimendi as a prime target, with manager Arne Slot keen on securing his services to strengthen the midfield. The Merseyside club was prepared to trigger his release clause, but Zubimendi ultimately decided to remain at his boyhood club. Reports suggested that Zubimendi had a heartfelt discussion with Real Sociedad manager Imanol Alguacil before making his decision. The coach emphasised the impact a move abroad could have on his personal life and the unique attachment he shares with San Sebastian. These conversations played a pivotal role in his decision to turn down Liverpool’s advances.

With Manchester City now grappling with the prolonged absence of Rodri due to injury, the club view him as a fitting replacement for their defensive midfield role - although it has been claimed he is not a January target.

However, addressing the ongoing rumours, Zubimendi stated recently: "There will always be rumours and now that January is approaching, there will be too, but I don’t waste energy on outside noise. I’m happy with the way I’m handling it and I’m going to handle it."

Zubimendi's level-headed response reflects his professionalism and determination to keep his performances unaffected by external distractions. His loyalty, coupled with Sociedad’s determination to hold onto their prized asset, has become a cornerstone of the team’s stability. He will be back in action on January 5 when Sociedad play Ponferradina in the Copa del Rey.
