So who are the youngsters who could breakout in 2023-24 and show themselves to be the leading lights of the next generation?

GOAL has shone the spotlight on 24 players to watch in this season's Champions League who were all born in 2004 or later...

    Isaac Babadi (PSV)

Regarded as the best player to emerge from the PSV academy ranks since Cody Gakpo, Isaac Babadi has been promoted to the first-team squad this season and has already begun to make his mark for the Dutch side.

The 18-year-old - who was linked with a host of Premier League clubs over the summer - marked just his second senior appearance with a goal in Champions League qualifying, and though the midfielder is more likely to be used off the bench than as a starter, he has the potential to make his mark on the competition.

    Samson Baidoo (Red Bull Salzburg)

It will not come as a surprise that Salzburg come into the tournament with a new wave of talented youngsters in their line up, and Samson Baidoo has already made quite the impact in 2023-24.

The 19-year-old has established himself as the first-choice centre-back at the Austrian champions, and has also proven himself to be a threat from set-pieces, with two goals to his name already this campaign.

  • Roony Bardghji Copenhagen 2023-24Getty Images

    Roony Bardghji (FC Copenhagen)

Nicknamed 'The Swedish Messi' back in his homeland, big things are expected of Roony Bardghji this season as the forward looks to enjoy a true breakout campaign at FC Copenhagen.

Having become the youngest-ever scorer in the Danish Superliga almost two years ago, the 17-year-old has now established himself as a starter at Parken Stadium, and already has four goals to his name this season.

  • Jamie Bynoe-Gittens Borussia Dortmund 2023-24Getty Images

    Jamie Bynoe-Gittens (Borussia Dortmund)

Having left Manchester City to join Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2020, injuries have plagued Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, but between spells on the sidelines, the winger has shown just why many tipped him to have a similar impact at Signal-Iduna Park as Jadon Sancho.

The 19-year-old already has 25 first-team appearances under his belt for the German side, and his ability in one-on-one situations marks him out as one of England's brightest young talents.

  • Mo-Ali Cho Real Sociedad 2023-24Getty Images

    Mohamed-Ali Cho (Real Sociedad)

Having spent time in the academies of PSG and Everton, Mohamed-Ali Cho broke out in the 2021-22 season at Angers, with his form in Ligue 1 earning him a €11 million (£9.5m/$11.7m) move to Real Sociedad last summer.

The 19-year-old's debut season in Spain was interrupted by injuries, but the France Under-21s forward is now back in contention as La Real return to the pinnacle of European football for the first time in a decade.

  • Julien Duranville Borussia Dortmund 2023-24Getty Images

    Julien Duranville (Borussia Dortmund)

Described as being a future Ballon d'Or contender by his former manager at Anderlecht, Vincent Kompany, Julien Duranville was snapped up by Borussia Dortmund in January for a fee of €8.5m (£7.3m/$9m), and by the end of the season had forced his way into Edin Terzic's plans.

The 17-year-old, who can play on either wing, has missed the opening weeks of the season through injury, but many expect him to be the next world-class talent to emerge at Westfalenstadion over the next couple of seasons.

  • Eguinaldo (Shakhtar Donetsk)

Shakhtar Donetsk's love affair with Brazilian players is well-established by now, and there is hope that Eguinaldo will be the latest samba star to make his mark on the Ukrainian giants.

Signed from Vasco da Gama over the summer, the 19-year-old attacking midfielder has electric pace and quick feet that can leave defenders for dead.

  • Alejandro Garnacho Man Utd 2023-24Getty Images

    Alejandro Garnacho (Manchester United)

Alejandro Garnacho only turned 19 over the summer, but the winger is already firmly-established within the Manchester United first-team picture and is expected to take another leap this season.

Already a full Argentina international, Garnacho could be key for Erik ten Hag as he aims to fill the gap left by the absences of Antony and Jadon Sancho from the squad at present.

  • Gavi Villarreal Barcelona LaLiga 2023-24Getty Images

    Gavi (Barcelona)

Already a veteran of over 100 matches for Barcelona and with 23 Spain caps to his name, it's hard to believe that Gavi is still only 19, but that just speaks to just how talented the midfielder truly is.

Now a leader in Xavi's squad, the precocious teenager provides energy, a creative spark and a bit of bite to the Blaugrana in the middle of the pitch. He could play a key role in them reaching the knockout stages for the first time since 2021.

  • Oscar Gloukh Israel 2023Getty Images

    Oscar Gloukh (Red Bull Salzburg)

Salzburg paid €7m (£6m/$7.5m) to sign Oscar Gloukh from Maccabi Tel Aviv back in January, and it seems highly likely that they will make a huge profit on the Israel midfielder when they eventually come to sell him in the future.

The 19-year-old has emerged as a key creative force for both club and country, with the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham having been credited with interest in him over the past couple of months.

  • Arda Guler Real Madrid 2023-24Getty Images

    Arda Guler (Real Madrid)

Though Arda Guler won't be available for the opening few matchdays of this season's Champions League after undergoing knee surgery, there is hope he can provide Real Madrid with an X-factor off the bench later in the competition.

The 18-year-old moved to Santiago Bernabeu for an initial €20m (£17m/$21m) over the summer as Los Blancos beat Barcelona to the signing of a playmaker who averaged a goal or assist every 91 minutes since breaking into the Fenerbahce first team in 2021-22.

  • Dijon Kameri Salzburg 2022-23Getty Images

    Dijon Kameri (Red Bull Salzburg)

The star of Salzburg's run to the UEFA Youth League final in 2022, Dijon Kameri graduated to the first team last season and started matches in the Champions League group stages before injuries ruled the 19-year-old out for around six months.

Now back fit, the Austria youth international remains a regular in Salzburg's matchday squads as they aim to reach the knockout stages yet again.

  • Karim Konate Salzburg 2023-24Getty Images

    Karim Konate (Red Bull Salzburg)

Salzburg's conveyor belt of potential superstar strikers is showing no signs of slowing down if the early-season performances of Karim Konate is anything to go by.

The 19-year-old Ivory Coast international has scored six goals in eight games to kick-off the new campaign, and if he can carry that form into the Champions League, then Europe's elite are likely to be sniffing around sooner or later.

  • Rico Lewis Manchester City 2023-24

    Rico Lewis (Manchester City)

While Manchester City continue to turn a massive profit in selling-on top academy talents, one player who they won't be letting go of anytime soon is versatile defender Rico Lewis, whose emergence gave fans great delight last season.

Not 19 until November, City's pretty kind draw means Pep Guardiola may rotate in Europe, which should give Lewis the chance to impress in the competition where he scored his first professional goal last season.

  • Jovan Mijatovic Red Star Belgrade 2023-24Getty Images

    Jovan Mijatovic (Red Star Belgrade)

With Aleksandar Mitrovic, Dusan Vlahovic and Luka Jovic currently vying for a spot in the Serbia national team, the country has shown that it knows how to develop top No.9s, and Jovan Mijatovic is seen as a potential star of the future.

The 18-year-old, who last season wore the No.9 shirt for Red Star Belgrade, has made over 20 first-team appearances for the club and is expected to be involved upon their return to the Champions League.

  • Yankuba Minteh Feyenoord 2023-24Getty Images

    Yankuba Minteh (Feyenoord)

While Newcastle fans are buzzing about their return to the Champions League, they may also be keeping half an eye on one of their on-loan youngsters, Yankuba Minteh, who will also be looking to make his mark in the competition.

Having joined the Magpies from Odense for €7m (£6m/$7.5m) in the summer, he was sent on loan to Feyenoord, where the 19-year-old forward has already netted twice in his first five Eredivisie games, while he also scored on his full international debut for The Gambia during the international break.

  • YOUSSOUFA MOUKOKO BORUSSIA DORTMUND 12082023Getty Images

    Youssoufa Moukoko (Borussia Dortmund)

Remarkably, Youssoufa Moukoko will be appearing in his fourth Champions League campaign this term despite the fact that he won't turn 19 until November, with the Germany international striker hopeful that he can stay fit and return on the remarkable potential he showed in Dortmund's academy.

The summer signing of Niclas Fullkrug has threatened to push the striker down the pecking order, and he will hope that shining in Europe will convince Edin Terzic to put him back in the starting line-up.

  • Cher Ndour PSG 2023-24Getty Images

    Cher Ndour (PSG)

Likened to Paul Pogba for his languid running style and brilliant eye for a pass, Cher Ndour arrived at Paris Saint-Germain this summer after deciding that first-team opportunities weren't going to be forthcoming at Benfica.

The 19-year-old has gone straight into the first-team squad at Parc des Princes, though is not yet a regular starter under Luis Enrique.

  • Joao Neves Benfica 2023-24Getty Images

    Joao Neves (Benfica)

Having stepped into the Benfica squad following the sale of Enzo Fernandez in January, Joao Neves has very quickly grown into the starting No.6 at Estadio da Luz.

The 18-year-old's performances have led to him being linked with a move to Manchester United, who are looking to sign a long-term replacement for Casemiro in the near future.

  • Orri Oskarsson Copenhagen 2023-24Getty Images

    Orri Oskarsson (FC Copenhagen)

Copenhagen striker Orri Oskarsson has already made headlines in this season's Champions League after netting a hat-trick against the team managed by his own father during qualifying.

A goal machine at youth level, the 19-year-old Iceland international has shown enough in his first senior appearances that he could follow Rasmus Hojlund in graduating from the Danish side's academy into one of Europe's hottest young marksmen.

  • Mathys Tel Bayern Munich 2023-24Getty Images

    Mathys Tel (Bayern Munich)

After Harry Kane arrived at Bayern Munich over the summer, reports suggested Mathys Tel would be loaned out to gain experience elsewhere. The €28.5m (£24.5m/$30m) signing from Rennes chose to stick around, however, and the Bavarians are glad he did.

The 18-year-old has scored twice and assisted once in four substitute appearances so far this season, meaning he now averages a goal involvement every 80 minutes since arriving at the Allianz Arena in the summer of 2022.

  • Arthur Vermeeren Antwerp 2023-24Getty Images

    Arthur Vermeeren (Antwerp)

A star of Antwerp's surprise Belgian title win last season, Arthur Vermeeren is regarded as one the best young defensive midfielders in Europe, with top clubs already showing an interest in the 18-year-old.

Barcelona and Manchester United are among those to have been linked with Vermeeren, whose comfort on the ball sets him apart from similar players of his age.

  • Lamine Yamal Barcelona Villarreal 2023-24

    Lamine Yamal (Barcelona)

One of the biggest stories of the young season has been the emergence of Lamine Yamal as a force for both club and country, with the Barcelona winger already looking like he could live up to the claims that he is the best player to emerge from La Masia since Lionel Messi.

The 16-year-old became the youngest player to both debut and score for the Spain national team during the international break and has given Xavi's side a spark in La Liga too. A star is being born in front of our eyes.

  • Warren Zaire-Emery PSG 2023-24Getty Images

    Warren Zaire-Emery (PSG)

Warren Zaire-Emery already holds one Champions League record after becoming the youngest player to start a knockout game in the competition last season, and he continues to go from strength to strength at PSG.

The 17-year-old has become a regular starter in his natural central midfield role under Luis Enrique, and given the attention PSG's group with receive, could soon become a household name if he performs to his potential in the coming months.
