Lamine Yamal warned 'talent isn't enough' to reach the next level as Hansi Flick plays down 'super' hype about Barcelona winger

Barca boss Flick has warned that Yamal’s journey to the very top will not be driven by natural ability alone. Speaking before Wednesday’s Champions League showdown with PSG, the German played down the “super, super” hype surrounding the teenager, stressing that only hard work and defensive responsibility will allow him to take the next step in his career.

Flick, addressing questions about the winger’s development, made it clear he wants to see more than just highlight-reel moments from the 18-year-old. “I don’t like this whole ‘super, super’ thing. He’s exceptional, but there are other exceptional players on the team,” Flick said. “He’s 18 years old and he also has to focus on working.” 

The German manager elaborated on what exactly Yamal must improve, particularly against PSG’s dangerous left flank. “To get to the next level, one or two steps higher, you have to work hard, talent alone isn’t enough,” Flick explained. “It’s not just about playing with the ball, it’s also about defending. That’s what we need from all players, not just him.” With Nuno Mendes expected to bomb forward, Yamal’s defensive diligence will be crucial.

Barca host PSG in a heavyweight Champions League clash with both sides missing key attackers. With Raphinha sidelined, Marcus Rashford is expected to start again on the wing, while Yamal could play a key role if trusted from the outset.
