Chelsea, PSG earn more than $100 million from Club World Cup run, as Lionel Messi's Inter Miami seal $21 million payout

Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain each earned more than $100 million for their runs to the Club World Cup final.

Ahead of this summer's tournament, FIFA confirmed that the prize pool for the event would total $1 billion, with $525 million to reward participants and a further $475 million distributed based on performances in the competition.

While the exact value of each European club's participation payout hasn't been released, Sports Business Journal estimates that both champions Chelsea and runners-up PSG eclipsed $100 million, after earning $85 million and $75 million, respectively, for their performances in the tournament.

While none of the MLS representatives had a particularly long run - only Inter Miami advanced out of the group stage - the three teams earned significant payouts for their participation in the competition.

Inter Miami earned more than $21 million by advancing to the Round of 16, where Lionel Messi and his teammates lost to PSG. LAFC, meanwhile, earned $10.55 million, thanks to their group stage draw with Flamengo, while the Seattle Sounders - losers of all three group stage matches - took home the minimum of $9.55 million.

Mexico's Pachuca joined the Sounders on $9.55 million after losing their three matches, while Monterrey matched Miami's $21 mllion for making it out of the group stage.

In total, the European clubs in the competition took home more than 62 percent of the prize money, with South American clubs netting 20 percent, largely thanks to Fluminense's run to the semifinal.

Auckland City, who were the lone representative from Oceania, earned the lowest payout, netting $4.58 million - still a hefty payday for the New Zealand-based semi-pro club.

The next edition of the Club World Cup is scheduled to be held in 2029. It will be the second to be held under the new 32-team format. Saudi Arabia's Al-Ahli, Egypt's Pyramids FC, Mexico's Cruz Azul and French giants PSG have already conformed their places in the field by winning their respective continental competitions.

There have been reports that FIFA is considering again holding that tournament in the United States.
