Aitana Bonmati to Chelsea?! Barcelona keen to renew Ballon d’Or winner’s contract amid lucrative transfer interest from WSL clubs

Bonmati shone as Barca won a third Women's Champions League title and secured an incredible quadruple, breaking the deadlock in last week's final against Lyon. She also scored a crucial equaliser in the semi-finals against Chelsea, with such contributions making it incredibly likely that her second Ballon d'Or win will follow later this year.

Unsurprisingly, Barca is keen to renew the midfielder's contract, which is currently set to expire in the summer of 2025. However, it will also come as no shock to learn that there is interest from elsewhere, with Mundo Deportivo understanding that Chelsea is the club most interested in prizing her away from Catalunya.

According to the report, Chelsea would be willing to pay the €3 million (£2.55m/$3.26m) release clause in Bonmati's contract and then offer her a four-year contract, in which she would receive around €2m (£1.7m/$2.17m) per season. Esport3 in Catalunya adds that Chelsea, who wanted to sign the midfielder last season, are one of three English clubs interested in her, though Bonmati's priority is Barca.

Mundo Deportivo reports that Barca is already working on offering Bonmati an attractive proposal of their own, with the terms of her current deal sure to improve as the last renewal was signed in December 2022. In the time since, Bonmati's stock has risen dramatically, via a Ballon d'Or win and a World Cup triumph with Spain that she was at the heart of. Esport3 understands that the offer Barca are preparing would make Bonmati the highest-paid player in the squad.

As the domestic season comes to a close, Barca with two league games remaining after this week's international break, Bonmati's focus will soon switch to the Olympics, where she is sure to be an important player for Spain as they aim to back up last year's World Cup win with a gold medal at the Games.
