Brighton could not have asked for a better start to the Premier League season, thrashing Aston Villa 4-0 in yesterday's opening-round fixture.
Minutes after the final whistle, though, came devastating news. A 72-year-old Brighton supporter had died.
According to The Sun, he collapsed while leaving the stadium to board the supporters' bus. Paramedics fought to save him but could not.
Brighton chief executive Paul Barber voiced the club's deep sorrow, describing a day that should have been "normal and joyful" but ended in tragedy.
The club also passed on their condolences to the man's family and friends. "Following the Aston Villa match, a 72-year-old Brighton and Hove Albion fan passed away after the game," an official statement read. "All of the club's staff extend their heartfelt condolences to his family and friends."
