James, who has featured for the Blues sporadically in the 2024-25 campaign due to his continuous battle with a debilitating injury record, was left out of the matchday squad that went up against Brighton in the FA Cup on Saturday. The club captain's absence raised a few eyebrows as many feared that the English right-back might have picked up a fresh injury but Maresca later revealed the real reason why James was left out.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
The west London side failed to progress to the next round of the FA Cup as they went down 2-1 against the Seagulls. The visitors took an early lead courtesy of Bart Verbruggen's own goal but Georginio Rutter soon brought Brighton back into the game by scoring the equaliser in the 12th minute. Kaoru Mitoma then scored the winner in the 57th minute to eliminate the Premier League giants.
