Phil Foden sends warning to Man City's rivals at Club World Cup as he reveals personal goals for summer tournament

Ahead of the revamped Club World Cup this summer, City star Foden has made it clear he and his team-mates want to win the inaugural edition of this competition; with the England international keen to put in some good personal performances of his own.

Ahead of the start of the tournament, he told FIFA: "Yeah, very excited. Obviously, it’s the best of the best teams all around the world. Obviously, it’s going to be something new for us that we have not experienced before but, like I said, it’s really good to have this competition, I think, to even get ready for this season. So, it’s like a great warm-up for this season and, yeah,hopefully, we can compete against the best teams and, yeah, try and win it.

"It’s definitely a bit of that, yeah. Obviously, speaking to a few of the lads, we’ve spoken about that – being the first on the trophy would be nice. So, that’s definitely the aim and, with the players that we have and the quality that we have in the team, I am pretty sure we’re more than capable of doing that. So, yeah, just looking forward to it."

When asked what his and City's goals were, he added: "Obviously, to win it, but I feel that my personal goal would be just to enjoy it, compete against the best players, and try to perform to the best of my ability. I think that’s me."

Foden has endured a difficult season, something that was in stark contrast to his superb 2023/24 campaign - where he was named the Men's PFA Players' Player of the Year. After notching 40 goal contributions last term, he chalked up just 16 this season, with the England international sometimes left out of Pep Guardiola's team. It is clear that the 25-year-old wants to put things right as soon as possible, though.

Foden's City begin their Club World Cup campaign against Wydad AC on June 18, followed by group stage matches versus Al Ain and Juventus later this month.
