  • £25m ($33m) fee agreed with Brentford and Leverkusen
  • Bees closing in as German side must sell first
  • Liverpool fans delighted with potential deal
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Liverpool defender Sepp van den Berg has been linked with a move away from Merseyside this summer and according to Sky Sports, both Brentford and Bayer Leverkusen are keen to sign the 22-year-old. However, it is the Bees who are close to finalising the deal as Xabi Alonso's Bundesliga champions must first sell a defender before signing the Dutchman.

  • WHAT THE FANS ARE SAYING

Reds fans on social media are delighted at the prospect of getting £25million ($33m) plus add-ons for a player who has made less than five appearances for Liverpool's first team.

X user @treconato was blown away by the news, posting: "30 mil is insane business."

Meanwhile, @JoeWood9991 praised sporting director Richard Hughes, saying: "£57mil+ sell on clauses for Carvalho & Sepp Van Den Berg is brilliant work Sir Richard Hughes."

@twoth0usand took aim at the buying party, simply writing: "Brentford got scammed twice."

Liverpool fan @PaulEyezOnMe agreed that the deal was more favourable for the Reds, posting: "Rinsing Brentford for millions."

While @Ma6eS_9 was surprised at the figure, adding: "Wow, that’s a lot of money for someone who barely played in the PL."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The fee for Van den Berg is a strange one considering he has not made an appearance in the Premier League. Both Thomas Frank and Alonso will have kept an eye on the Dutch Under-21 defender while he was on loan at Mainz in 2023-24. Having made 36 appearances in all competitions for the Bundesliga side, his performances on the pitch have clearly been enough to spark interest from some top clubs in Europe.

WHAT NEXT FOR VAN DEN BERG?

Van den Berg has a big decision to make in the coming days. While it appears the option to choose either Leverkusen or Brentford may be there, if the German champions cannot offload a defender, the only route out of Liverpool will be to West London and Frank's Brentford. The alternative is staying at Anfield where he will get limited minutes on the pitch.
